knee. This gives us an accurate depiction of the knee’s anatomy prior to surgery,
and the model we create becomes a precise surgical tool to guide bone cutting,
joint alignment, pin insertion and custom instrumentation.
Q: How does customization benefit the patient?
A: Creating a virtual knee replacement prior to surgery allows us to
know exactly what to expect when we enter the knee. This has a number of
advantages. Not only is the new joint custom fitted to a patient’s body and
lifestyle, but it also improves alignment accuracy, maximizes joint stability and
reduces the amount of bone cutting. This results in shorter surgical times, expedited recovery and an extended life expectancy of the joint.
Q: Why should a patient who is considering a total knee replacement
explore customized knee replacement surgery?
A: As a specialist in knee replacement surgery for almost 20 years, I
have remained on the forefront of my field and am excited about what is on
the horizon. The Kayal Orthopaedic Center is one of only a few practices in the
country using 3-dimensional blue-
prints to create custom knee joints,
all with tremendous success. Because
no two knees are the same, this tech-
nique allows us to predesign the ideal
knee for a person—from the shape of
the joint to its incision points—creat-
ing something that fits perfectly and
gives that person a new lease on life.

a fellowship-trained surgeon whose
practice is devoted entirely to the
spine. Because the pathologies and
diseases that affect the spine can have
devastating consequences, getting the
right care early is critical. Otherwise,
people can be left with neurologic
deficits, an inability to walk, or lost
bowel and bladder function. Our specialists have a conservative philosophy
