Mockingbird Cafe; 60 S Finley Ave, Basking

11 Church Street,
Hours: Lunch: Thurs and Fri, 12–2: 30 PM.
Dinner: Tue–Thurs and Sun, 5–9 PM; Friday
and Saturday, 5–10 PM.
Style: Warm orange walls and cool blue
tablecloths help this Mexican eatery establish its South of the Border atmosphere.
Decorative objects and paintings reflect
Mexican culture, and glass turtles (tortugas)
give the spot its name.
Don’t Miss: The chilled avocado soup ($7)
makes a refreshing starter, and in a similar
vein, so does a platter of house-made guacamole ($10). Burritos are flavorful, with
the California ($14) a standout. Stuffed with
well-seasoned meat and guacamole, and
topped with mild red salsa and cheese, it is
as delicious as it is filling. In the enchiladas
de mar ($15), crab and shrimp are sautéed
in salsa verde and baked in a fluffy tortilla.
Excellent fish tacos ($16) are served in soft
or hard blue-corn tortillas. The restaurant
offers a number of vegetarian dishes, including the Village Veggie sampler ($14), which
includes a sautéed vegetable flauta, a guacamole enchilada and a bean burrito.
Heads Up: The outdoor patio, which features a colorful, hand-painted mural of a
Mexican village, is open in warm weather.
The Scoop: Tortuga’s serves wine and
beer, but since it’s attached by swinging
doors to its next-door neighbor, Mitchell’s
Café, a small Irish pub, you can mosey over
for a stronger drink, some pub grub and an
abrupt change of scenery.
