Although 30 years have passed since she opened the Summit Hearing Aid Center,
Dr. Leslie Herman’s goal remains the same: helping her patients hear better. While the
technology she uses to achieve that goal has certainly changed, the needs of those who
are looking for hearing help are as pressing as ever and on the rise.
“My patients are more informed about hearing and more demanding of the performance
of their amplification devices and wireless accessories,” she says. “But I believe their
knowledge is a plus. Also, technology is just the beginning to better hearing. As Dr. Neil
J. DiSarno, chief staff officer for audiology at the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association, noted in The New York Times earlier this year, ‘A hearing aid is a complex
medical device, not a simple sound amplifier.’ The treatment following the fitting of a
device includes extensive counseling and programming.”
“We want people to know that if they or someone they care about would like to hear
clearer and with less effort, they should feel free to call us,” Dr. Herman says. “We’d love to
help them hear better.”
