of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System,
has offered an innovative program
to help victims of domestic violence. How does it work?
A: Tina Miles: In order to
obtain a court order of protection
against their abuser, victims of domestic violence have traditionally had to
go to court following hospitalization.
All too often that simply hasn’t happened, and the Hospital to Court
Program was created to address this
problem. It provides a quick, protected way for patients who wish to
obtain a restraining order to do so,
via direct video link communication
between the hospital and court officers. Patients can complete the necessary documentation within the safety
of our walls; we can literally take this
process right to their bedside if necessary. To date, we have coordinated 39 such
video hearings. Our initiative for 2015 is to make video access to an on-call
judge available 24/7.
Q: How does this program align with the hospital’s overall mission?
A: Sr. Campeotto: St. Joseph’s principal purpose is “to meet the needs
of those who are the most vulnerable, [that is,] the poor and underserved.”
Within our mission statement stands a longtime directive: “To care for people
who through shame might conceal their necessities.” The Hospital to Court
“Domestic violence isn’t
just a problem that a;ects
underserved populations. It
crosses the boundaries of
ethnicity, culture, religion
and socioeconomic status.”
