HOT and COLD
Two New Jerseyans were among
the 24 “geniuses” honored with
2013 MacArthur Fellowships. Dr.
Jeffrey Brenner, a primary care
physician in Camden, and Julie Livingston, a Rutgers history professor,
each will receive a $625,000 grant
over five years.
The State Superior Court ruled that
New Jersey must allow same-sex
couples to marry. The decision came
after Governor Christie vetoed a bill
last year that would have legalized
gay marriage and after the U. S.
Supreme Court ruled in June that the
federal government can’t deny benefits to same-sex married couples.
The Supreme Court of New Jersey
overturned a lower court’s ruling that awarded a Harvey Cedars
couple $375,000 after their lengthy
battle against a dune project they
claim blocks their view of the ocean.
The husband and wife finally settled
for $1. The decision is an important
step toward collecting the more
than 1,000 easements needed to
complete the dune project.
Electrical lines corroded by saltwater and sand in Superstorm Sandy
are being blamed for the fire that
ravaged the Seaside Park boardwalk. The blaze devastated four
blocks of the boardwalk, destroying
more than 50 businesses.
New Jersey is home to three of the
50 ugliest college campuses in
the country, according to
Complex magazine, a New York-based
publication geared toward the urban
male. Rowan University in Glassboro
was 10th on the list, with the New
Jersey Institute of technology in
Newark coming in 14th and Rutgers-New Brunswick taking 26th place.
