Switching from vascular to bariatric surgery gave Dr. Michael Bilof the opportunity to cure type 2 diabetes versus merely manage its
e;ects. He founded Garden State Bariatrics and Wellness Center in 2007 and o;ers lifesaving solutions for individuals with obesity and
related diseases. “Recent clinical trials, such as the STAMPEDE study, show the advantages of bariatric surgery over traditional medical
therapy for diabetes,” he says. “If someone is diabetic, bariatric surgery is definitely something he or she should consider.” Dr. Bilof’s group
is one of the few to o;er the most advanced and cutting-edge bariatric surgery available—the duodenal switch. “It resolves or eliminates
type 2 diabetes more than 90 percent of the time,” he says.
Last year Garden State Bariatrics partnered with Deborah Heart and Lung Center to provide a comprehensive bariatric program.
“Our joint program with Deborah has been having great success. We look forward to continuing its growth,” says Dr. Bilof, who serves as
section chief of bariatric surgery at Deborah, as well as at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. He also is president of the New Jersey chapter
of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Bilof practices with Dr. Basil Yurcisin and physician assistants Bella Baum
and Keith Bischo;.
