OUR TOP PICKS
FOR FALL DAYS
;;;;; ;;;;;; ;; ;;;; a unique
problem: How does one choose among
all the fun fall things to do around our
state? Our New Jersey Monthly sta;
doesn’t make it any easier. This issue
they’ve come up with more than ;;
suggestions for Fall Day Trips.
I’ll take that back: Our crew does, in
fact, simplify the task by categorizing
their favorite fall options, from foliage
drives and harvest festivals to cranberry tours and a Pine Barrens bike ride.
They’ll fill you in on the best spots for
pumpkin picking and haunted houses—
even where to ride a Clydesdale horse.
;;’; ;;; ;;;;; that a single stroke of
a pen can touch so many hearts. But
when Governor Chris Christie signed
a bill in May ;;;; that allows New
Jersey adoptees to obtain their birth
records, he gave hope to thousands in
the state who longed to reconnect with
their birth families.
Under the new law, adoptees’ birth
records became accessible in January. Since that time, more than ;,;;;
people have received their original
birth certificates from the state. Their
stories are heartwarming—and sometimes heartbreaking.
In this issue, correspondents Tina
Kelley (herself an adoptee) and Caren
Chesler tell the stories of five adoptees
who were able to identify their kin for
the first time, thanks to the new law.
Their reports are filled with touching
and intimate moments, and reveal the
complex ethical and practical issues
involved in opening birth records.
;;;;;;;; ;;;;;;;;;;;;; Leslie
Garisto Pfa; has a knack for making
science sound like fun. She does it
again this month with her profile of
Bonnie Bassler, a Princeton microbiologist who listens to bacteria “talk.”
What Bassler hears will amuse and
amaze—as only Pfa; can convey.
